Stocks Hotel is a beautiful country house located at the heart of Sark.
Originally built as a farmhouse in 1741, Stocks became an hotel in 1895 and has many links with Sark history and island heritage. The traditional granite buildings lie in a sunny, south-facing valley above an old smugglers cove and one of the island’s most accessible beaches.
Stocks has been blessed by a combination of mother nature and a succession of caring owners. The beautiful old property lies at the confluence of two, sunny south-facing and sheltered valleys. The buildings are tucked away from the prevailing winds and adjacent to a prolific fresh water stream with an old Artesian well, renowned to be one of the oldest in Sark.
The hotel is surrounded by acres of mature woodland, meadows and gardens where a variety of exotic plants thrive in the mild climate. The garden is essentially informal, rustic and rural. It predominantly features lawns, informal borders, shrubs and trees, which flower variously throughout most of the year.
Adjacent to the swimming pool is the oldest Mulberry tree in the Channel Islands. There are also mature Magnolia trees and a bank of Camelias, plus numerous other interesting species. Behind the hotel is a magnificent old Ash tree with two large over-hanging boughs. Locals refer to this as the hanging tree because carcasses of fresh Sark meat were often hung here to mature. The front lawn features an old cider press, one of a number still found in Sark.
Stocks was the home of the Armorgie family for thirty years and following the investment by the Woolford/Magell family the hotel remains in family ownership and under personal management.
We have a well-established reputation for providing friendly hospitality in the beautifully renovated luxurious accommodation.
Today, Stocks Hotel remains the finest independent luxury hotel in Sark.
